I wanted the invitation to look like a rock chart. Instead of the rocks actual names I typed out the party information. A small mesh bag filled with rocks was stapled onto the front of the invitation for added charm. A miniature magnifying glass was also tied onto the invitation…enlarging the word “PARTY”.

Follow the recipe below to make easy ROCK COOKIES!

Ingredients:

3/4 cup butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 and 1/4 cups of flour
1/4 teaspoon of salt

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix all the ingredients together until the dough is well incorporated. Form into rock shaped cookies with clean hands (makes about eight 3-4” cookies).

Bake on a greased cookie sheet for 10 minutes or until they begin to brown. Remove from the oven and cool completely.

Combine 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon milk, 1 drop of black food coloring, and a tiny drop of green food coloring together until you have reached your desired color and consistency…add more powdered sugar or milk if needed. Using a basting brush, paint glaze onto cooled cookies until evenly spread.

What a fun party! I can totally see my grandson having a party like this when he gets a little older (just 2 now) … and maybe decides that he isn’t going to be a doctor. :) I tried to find who did the cake — I am quite fascinated by the crystals and would love to know how they were done.

    Hi Kara,

Love this theme. I’m a teacher and teach this unit to my grade 3 students. I was wondering if you could tell me where you get the posters and those labeled cards from? They would be great for my students.

    Thanks,
    Jodi

      Hi Jodi!

I got the poster off etsy.com and the cards are from Oriental Trading! I sprayed them with stain to make them look aged :].

Thanks Kara! Would you want to sell the download or give me the name of where you got the cards for matching the sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks from. This would make a great discovery center in my classroom.

        Love it!

    Hi Kara,
You rock! I am so excited that I discovered this post. I have been thinking about doing a rock theme party for my kiddo. My son also loves rocks and is fascinated with volcanoes. What is the blue gel-like substance in the plastic dishes and galvanize tub? Can you please explain how your mom made her volcano? Thank you so much for sharing your fun, creative ideas.

Brilliant! My 7yo has the same overriding *obsession* with all things rocks and minerals! Such terrific ideas, beautifully implemented! Now if I can only figure out how to incorporate American Girls to satisfy his twin sister. :-)

Hi, we are having a geology party at the end of this month. Did you make up the cards that you had them use for the rock hunt or are they pre-made from someplace? I see the big chart on Oriental Trading, but curious about the small cards that they could match their findings to. Thank you!
