Superhero Birthday Party

This SUPERHERO BIRTHDAY PARTY was submitted by Justine Worthington of Worthington Weddings and Events. I love how so much of this party is DIY but you would never know to look at it! It just shows how far guest participation, the right venue, and good photography can go to create an amazing and memorable party!

Here are some of my favorite elements of this superhero party:
The printable scraps mod-podged onto the wooden fork handles
The ‘POP’ labels stuck to the side of pop cans… genius!
The printable snack cones
The super-kids lineup, complete with masks and capes
The Duct Tape dumbbells
and MORE!

This is what Justine said about planning the party- “My work as a wedding coordinator typically includes roses and lace, this event on the other hand was all about the ZAP! and POW! In the event planning industry, I get to meet oodles of talented colleagues and this Super Hero Birthday party happened to be in honor of photographer Molly Dues’ two sons, Clark(4) and Issac(7). Molly was a blast to work for, she’s bubbly and full of fun. She wanted the party to be held in the Molly Dues Photography Studio, which, for a planner is a dream space for putting on a party.

On the menu we had “pigs in a cape” (corn dogs), “super nuggets” (chicken nuggets), “hero mix” (snack mix), and “POPcorn” (uhh…popcorn). For dessert, the kids would enjoy personalized hero cupcakes. Molly baked the cupcakes herself and even added little fondant capes to some! Each little hero was asked to come to the party in their special heroic get-up and masks were awaiting them at their seats. In the end, each guest would be given their mask to take home and a hero cup full of treasures especially made for those with super powers.

For entertainment, I researched and designed a few special little games. To get the party rolling we played ‘Pass the Kryptonite’. The tiny heroes all sat in a circle and while music played we passed ‘kryptonite’ (green glow sticks bundled together!). When the music stopped, the guest with the glow sticks was out (since kryptonite is bad for super powers, you know!) But there were no worries for these tykes, ‘getting out’ simply meant that it was time for them to jump up and grab a plate of munchies and find their seat at the table so they could rejuvenate their powers.

I also had a few other smaller games set out for the kids to enjoy and to exercise their super powers. The first was designed for the kids to guess what was in a brown paper bag by only using their super sense of touch. Some of the contents in the paper bags included matchbox cars, rice, and deflated balloons! The second challenge for the little heroes was to use their super eyesight and brain power to guess how many bouncing balls had been placed in a glass jar.

And finally, our last game included one that would let the kids use all of their super speed and might! They had to capture some villains of their own. Three very heroic parents stepped up to play the role of our villains and with that, the game was on. The kids were split into three teams and each team was given a color of crepe paper streamers. The first team to ‘tie up’ their villain with crepe paper would be the first to dive into the birthday cupcakes! Talk about motivation!

We maintained a very low and reasonable budget on the birthday party. I created many of the party props from scratch including the dumbbells, paper snack holders and the mod-podge letters. I recycled scraps from the supplies I bought and kept creating! For instance, I mod-podged the handle of the forks with leftover pintables and used items from around the office to fashion the guessing games. Kids’ parties are so fun that they are easily one of my favorite projects to tackle and enjoy.”

Dress Up Themed 4th Birthday Party

All little girls just love playing dress up…so how fun would a party centered around everything to do with “dressing up” be?! Jennifer said this about planning the party- ”When my two girls turned four, they wanted two different birthday parties. I split the difference by creating a dress-up party, so each girl could dress in the theme of her choice. Their friends came in costumes, and wore ours, adding loads of jewelry. It was a blast, so I’ve re-created the party to share it with you. You can purchase a Dress-Up Party Plan or Dress-Up Party Kit from my Etsy shop.

Call it a dress-up party, call it a princess party (because this is a great way to have a princess party that’s not character-driven), call it a fashion party — I promise your birthday girl and her guests will be giggling for hours.

I started with the party space, the eclectic and wonderful Salon Bastille. The salon is done in turquoise with pops of pink and yellow — a color palette I couldn’t resist. (HUGE thanks to Ashley for loaning me your space!)

Printables
Heather of Chickabug custom-designed all the printables for this party! It was so much fun working with Heather and I love what she created. You can find the printables through her shop. Heather had the best ideas and added so much to this party! Here is what I love about working with Heather: I ask for a bottle label, and this is what she sends me back — it’s so clever that Heather designed a Food Facts label! She goes above and beyond and every surprise was a wonderful one.

Dessert Table
I set up our dessert table in the center of the salon on a round table. The table was draped in a fuchsia pintuck tablecloth. Behind the table, I set up a folding screen as our backdrop. The dressing screen was in keeping with our dress-up theme and held the birthday girl’s initial in pink, glittery fabulousnesses.

I choose desserts that were pink and had fashion or jewelry inspiration. Our cake was a vanilla ruffle cake, which I selected because the ruffle reminded me of dressmaker details. Budget tip: If your Target has a bakery, take them a photo of my cake and ask them if they can recreate it. My Target charged me $18 for this three-layer cake. I topped the cake with a wooden doll made to look like the birthday girl. Find the cake toppers at Sweetie Pie Cake Topper.

Chocolate cupcakes with the same pink frosting as the cake were topped with custom designed 3D fondant toppers from Edible Details. Little shoes, purses, and pearls – so cute! I stacked two cake stands to create a cupcake stand, and sadly it wasn’t tall enough to accommodate all of Brittany’s amazing toppers. Each purse and pair of shoes was different and stunning. I’ve kept them all. I’m thinking of putting them in a shadow box in my imaginary dream office.

Cookie pops were made to match our invitation by Sweet Goosie Girl who seems to be able to design anything and never disappoint. These cookies just took my breath away. And cookies on a stick are just more fun.

Our other sweet treats included:
• White chocolate covered Oreos drizzled with pink chocolate from Sweet Tooth Sweetie.
• Chocolate buttons and corset lollipops from The Frosted Petticoat.
• Sugar jewels from Candied Cakes.
• Ring pops.
• Candy bracelets.
• Pink and blue candy sticks.

Dining/Activity Table
In the lobby of the salon, I created a dining/activity table at a coffee table. The girls sat on floor pillows. From a turquoise chandelier above the table, I hung pink tissue poms. Our centerpiece was a pink, dress form-style jewelry holder that displayed one of our finished craft projects. And I couldn’t resist adding a “Tiffany” box with a bling ring to each place setting.

Jewelry/Craft Station
I had five activities planned for this party:
1. Dress up in costumes and accessories
2. Have a fashion show
3. Make tulle roll “dresses”
4. Bead “bubblegum” necklaces
5. Make sugar hand scrub
All the components needed for these activities and crafts were housed in a metal cabinet. I lined the shelves with the same pink paper place mats used on the dining table. From the cabinet doors, I draped pink and turquoise bead garland.

In the Jewelry Station, I purchased an open frame and added black foam core, then pinned gloves to the board. We also had necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, and feather hair clips. The rings were displayed on white mini mirrors. On either side of the cabinet were clothes trees that held our dresses and feather boas. For the birthday girl, we had a special pink beaded crown.

In the Craft Station, we had the tulle dress, necklace, and sugar hand scrub supplies.

Our Fashion Show …
Each girl could change costumes and accessories as much as they liked. They took turns walking our Pink Carpet.

Dress Making …
If you’ve ever made a toilet paper wedding gown at a bridal shower, you understand how to play this game. I used shades of pink tulle to make things easier for little hands.

Necklace Making …
I asked Daizy Bugz to design a necklace for this party. Each girl had her own necklace craft kit in our party colors.

Favors
At end of our party, each girl received a costume award. These were all non-competitive awards, like “Most Layers” or “Pinkest.” I made these by altering inexpensive award ribbons from WalMart and adding a Chickabug printable circle. I also made purses from dollar store bags, a silk flower, and a Chickabug thank you tag. The girls used the purses to take home their favors.

I hope you like the party! If you’d like to recreate this for you daughter, please consider my easy-peasy Dress-Up Party Plan.”

Curious George 4th Birthday Party

Who has a child who loves Curious George?! If you do, then this adorable CURIOUS GEORGE FOURTH BIRTHDAY PARTY submitted by Meredith Tomasulo of That’s My Kind of Party is for you! So many darling ideas here that you won’t want to miss!

Meredith said this about planning the party- “My son turned 4, I can’t believe it – seems like just yesterday we were bringing the little guy home. He is all boy and loves his firetrucks but he also really loves to read – especially Curious George. The week after my daughter’s 2nd birthday (here) he told me he definitely wanted a ‘George’ party. It is all he talked about so I started planning. When we read Curious George and the Firefighters I knew I had to combine both ideas AND give every child the book as the favor.

DECOR: It wasn’t hard to combine the Curious George and the Firetruck theme. I printed pictures from the book and had them framed on the table. I laid a bookcase on its side and filled the shelves with bananas, Curious George stuffed animal and a fire hat. There was a fireman’s pole with George sliding down on the table. We also used lots of firetrucks around the room. The fireman hats were hung on a frame that the kids grabbed as they headed outside. As a tradition the front door was painted in the birthday theme- A big Curious George holding balloons.

FOOD AND SWEETS: The birthday boy had 2 requests-cupcakes in a icecream cone and pirate booty/popcorn in popcorn boxes. No problem. Twizzlers were fireman poles, banana runt candy and pretzels were monkey food and the kids loved the donut holes and the fruit skewers. I made my famous cake pops with rainbow sprinkles. The kids ate Chef pisghetti bagel bites and the adults had homemade baked ziti.

ACTIVITIES: The local Fire Co sent a Firetruck to our house! We called 4 Alarm Fire and all the kids ran outside. They got to climb inside the truck, sit in the chairs, try on the boots and hats and my son even got to sound the siren before they left. The faces on the kids when this truck pulled up was priceless!!

FAVORS: All kids received a firemans hat with a George sticker on the front, Curious George and the Firefighters book and a swirl lollipop.”

Cinderella 4th Birthday Party

I just couldn’t resist posting another darling CINDERELLA THEMED BIRTHDAY PARTY! This beautiful celebration was submitted by Keren of Keren Precel Events! I adore the backdrop and pink and blue color scheme. Such a beautiful party with a lot of great disney princess party ideas…

Here is what Keren said about planning the party- “We had the pleasure to create our first Cinderella party for a beautiful, 4 year old girl name Lilah. We teamed up with Cara Buffalino Silman from Freshmade NYC to create this beautiful, delicate princess themed party. We wanted to create a Cinderella theme, but to create our own designed elements, rather than using the obvious store bought items. We started off by creating a one of a kind custom made “logo” for the party: a pink princess carriage, decorated with blue lace. That motif re-appeared in most of the designed items that include: A back drop, wishing tree and cards, photo booth, strings of flags, custom made milk bottles and straws and many more. Decor items included a hand made horse and carriage, original Cinderella figurines, buttons and threads, assorted porcelain Cinderella’s mice and a vintage clock. The favors were a real treat: A “ragged” paper bag that contained a tower of button shaped cookies, tied in a ribbon.”

Betty said this about planning the party- “This was an “Under the Sea” party for my son Peter’s 4th birthday. We all were looking forward to this for such a long time, and really couldn’t wait for the day to arrive. I started by asking my son what type of party he wanted? The simple answer from Peter was “mummy i want a fish party”. We have two fish of our own in our home and both Peter and his brother love feeding them whenever they can. I wanted to create a party that was bold and bright in colour and had a modern feel to it.

I think the invites really dictated the look of the entire event. I particularly loved the scale print on the invite which we then used as part of the backdrop. Lee-Ann (from Little Poppet Parties) did an amazing job designing the invites. They were super cute , and what i really loved was the matching lolly bags that were given to each child at the party. The detail and care taken to achieve such gorgeous treat bags was to die for.

Both myself and Lisa (from cakes and biscuits by Lisa) worked very closely in designing some sweets treats that were going to highlight the sea theme. Sweet whale pops & cupcakes were just gorgeous. The oyster macaroons that were placed on antique sea shells vessels were beautiful. The birthday cake, well i still cant stop drooling over this. It was so exciting to finally see the plans, thoughts and discussions between Lisa and i come to fruition. I wanted Peter’s cake to be bright and bold and modern at the same time. I also asked Lisa if she could incorporate the scale fish print on the cake as well. Well what can i say I love the bright orange centre and also the scale print air brushing on the cake. We didn’t want to over do the coral so just adding a few pieces and of course a little octopus on top was just enough. This cake really popped in colour and design.

Noo (from Desert Menu Please) did an exquisite job with those biscuits. The sea horses, the sea shells, start fish and those amazing jelly fish were simply stunning. Too good to eat! I also visited an antique shop where I found a girl scout food box with rope handles which I used as the cake riser. It fit the theme perfectly.

The event was held at home so I transformed what is usually my outdoor room (showroom) into the kids area for the party. I styled the area with kids tables and chairs. On their chair each child received a deep sea scuba set. I had these made in royal blue and orange and sent to me from the US from Mahalo. These added a cute touch, and each child could pretend to dive looking for treasure or sea creatures under the sea. I draped royal blue fabric from the ceiling, hoping to achieve the feel of being under water. The same royal fabric was also used as draping on the candy/desert table, with an overlay of fish netting.

Along with indulging in the candies and deserts from the buffet, the children were also able to create their own wall art. I bought some frames and placed a picture of a sea creature or animal  so each child was able to spend time colouring in the picture to take home. I had also bought sea animals such as dolphins, star fish, whales, sea shells etc. made from ceramic and placed these in a bag with a paint brush and a pot of paint so the children could enjoy painting their own sea creature and again be able to take it home.

I really tried to think of activities the children would enjoy doing. I wanted them to walk away really feeling like they had an adventure under the sea. The highlight of the party for the kids, and i must say for the adults, was the live “Marine” show i had organised. Xavier (from Wildlife Xposure) really had us all excited. We were fortunate enough to witness sea creatures such as star fish, gorgeous little seahorses, baby shark, sea urchins, and a blue ring octopus. All the kids got to pet all the animals (except the octopus of course) and learn about the animals that live beneath the sea. I cannot tell you how much the kids enjoyed this. In fact Peter wanted to keep the shark!

While the kids were enjoying painting, colouring in their wall ar , face painting, and then being part of the Marine show, the adults had their own separate area to retreat to. I styled the adults tables and chairs with some beautiful fresh flowers, royal blue vases, sea shells and aluminium crabs. The weather was just divine so everyone was outside enjoying Melbourne weather. At each adult’s place setting, I placed a blue favour box which included a star fish biscuit they could take home, as a thank you for attending Peter’s birthday. I didn’t want the adults to miss out on having a sweet treat of their own.

After an eventful day the kids were exhausted with all the fun and laughs. It is such a thrill organising a party for someone really close to you.”
