Growing Up In The 80′s Birthday Party

This 80′S THEMED BIRTHDAY PARTY submitted by Lynlee Beckett of Lynlee’s Petite Cakes is just AWESOME! WOW!  Tetris rice crispies, Cabbage Patch Doll cake balls, Teddy Ruxpin & Glow Worm cupcakes…. I mean, HOW creative!!!

Lynlee said- “Though I don’t usually do this, I decided to throw myself a party for my 34th birthday! If you know me personally or follow me on Facebook, you might already know that I’m absolutely obsessed with the 80′s and have always wanted a themed party to celebrate this decade! I thought this would be the perfect opportunity now that 80′s and neon style are TOTALLY back! Since it was MY birthday, I opted for self-indulgence and focused on all the elements that brought me back to when I was growing up. This really was the most fun I’ve ever had shopping for party supplies because of all the AWESOME memories they evoked!!!
For the invites, I decided to re-create one of my favorite and essential items as a kid growing up in the 80′s: a Trapper Keeper! Utilizing graphics that I purchased from the “Awesome 80′s” collection on Etsy by Maree Truelove, I designed the binder, which I printed on photo paper to give it more construction and sheen, and added a small adhesive velcro. The details of the party were printed inside on lined paper that was attached to a stack of 4×6 index cards to add to the thickness. I had fun with all the colors and fonts that I downloaded for free on the internet!
The dessert table was centered by a cassette stereo and a red lips phone I found at local thrift stores. I created some stands with VHS and cassette tapes, along with some Mead Trapper folders, which I found in the supermarket stationary aisles… exactly where I did back in the day! Additional decor included miniature etch-a-sketches, slinkies and koosh balls. I created food labels with a denim digital paper from Granny Enchanted’s Blog {lightened to give it a more acid wash effect with some paint splashes}, then added some colorful designs and buttons and placed them on mini rubix cubes. I also found some RAD “Footloose” and “Flashdance” glasses at Ross Stores that were just perfect!
I was inspired by some Screech marshmallow pops I had seen in the Saved by the Bell party from Nicole at Million Dollar $mile Celebrations {one of my fave parties!}, so I dipped marshmallows in chocolate and confetti sprinkles and styled them with different fondant hair styles of the 80′s! Can you identify the do’s: the hair band, the Flock of Seagulls, punk mohawk, the rattail, the side pony tail and, of course, the mullet!
I wanted the background to resemble school lockers to display some 80′s memorabilia, so I came up with an idea to draw them with chalk and have one open with the actual items coming out of it. With the help of my dad and husband, we created an 8×8 blackboard by painting two wooden boards with chalkboard paint and attaching them together, along with a shelf and hook. The “inside” of the locker included my personal faves that I either owned or purchased at thrift stores, from toys to books to electronics. I purchased the super cute 80′s photobooth props from paper & cake and utilized a couple of the buttons to decorate the backpack with safety pins.
For dinner, we served cheeseburgers with the Wendy’s “Where’s the Beef?” 80′s slogan in little neon school bins, along with chicken nuggets. I wanted to re-create the McNugget Buddies toys from the 80′s McDonald Happy Meals, so I downloaded the photobooth props so generously offered by Oh Happy Day {thank you so much to Creative Juice for the fab tip!} to dress up the little nuggets! Refreshments included Ecto-Cooler Hi-C and Pac-Man energy drinks!
We couldn’t get all gussied up in our RAD 80′s outfits and not have a photo booth! We had a TOTALLY AWESOME time with the fun props from paper & cake and took some GNARLY polaroids!”

“Saved By The Bell” Party! – Movie, Epic, TV Series Party

In the 1990′s, who came home from school to watch the epic TV series, Saved By The Bell?! This SAVED BY THE BELL PARTY submitted by Nicole of Million Dollar Smile Celebrations will make the memories flood right in! Nicole said- “This totally tubular and ridiculous rad dessert table was created for In Flight’s One Year Anniversary. They hosted a fun competition, and I decided to put on the Ray Bans, blast a little Color Me Badd, and get my dessert table on… THEME: Saved by the Bell DETENTION Desserts What kid in the late 80s and early 90s didn’t roll out of bed in their Ninja Turtle pajamas to catch his/her favorite Saturday morning show… Saved by the Bell?!?! Filled with comedy (aka. Samuel Schreech Powers)… and a little drama (who knew caffeine pills were so dangerous)… and EVERYTHING 90s, our friends at Bayside High School taught us about love, friendship, and how to be Cool at School! I wanted my dessert table to be all things awesome, gnarly, and totally RAD… just how Zack and the gang would do it! DESSERTS:
Center Desk… The center of the table became this retro television I found off of craigslist for a whopping $15. No, it doesn’t work thanks to the change from analog to digital… but the static screen and knobs took me back to the good ole days. I placed Kelly ‘Kup’kowski Cakes on top of the tv and topped the cupcakes with the Class of ’93 photos and fondant toppers in the most awesome iconic fashion. Could that sneaker be any more amazing?! SHAAA! Orange sodas sat in front of the TV. Just because everything is cuter on sticks, I placed Schreech Pops on one side and gummy burgers on the other. The Schreech Pops were made by yours truly and displayed the multitude of faces of the sidekick that we grew to love (well, maybe not Lisa)! The gummy burgers were direct from The Max, the fav after-school hang-out/dance competition location/music video set!
Left Desk… Placed perfectly on AC’s dumbbell, Slater’s Sugar Cookies showed off the famous logo, Zach’s sneaker, the iconic opening credit pair of shades, a boom-box, and the Bayside logo. Go TIGERS!!! Because of Lisa’s shopping habit, Miss Lisa ‘Turtles’ were placed atop a stack of shoe boxes. Ice-cream flavored lollipops sat in retro sundae cups in tribute of the greatest girl group at Bayside High… Hot Sundae! “Mind to it… Go for it…”
Right Desk… Speaking of Hot Sundae, let’s not forget how stressed, excited, then scared Jessie Spano got over the music video shoot, the fame of the girl group, and applying for colleges. For that reason, Jessie’s Energy Pills sat on top of a large stack of textbooks. And it wasn’t just the girls that had a musical hit, the boy band Zack Attack swooned almost every girl at Bayside. Zack Attack Snacks, poly bags filled with neon sour gummies, sat on a platter hoisted up with an enormous pair of sneakers (jeans tucked IN, of course)! At the end of the day… and each season… the gnarly girls and bodacious boys of Bayside taught us one thing… Friends are Forever! So grab your Buddy Band Brownie, topped with neon Nerds (another specialty by me) and chill with a pal! Just don’t get caught by the princiPAL!!”VENDOR CREDITS:

1950s Happy Housewife Bridal Shower

Today’s winning party feature goes to this amazing 1950s HAPPY HOUSEWIFE BRIDAL SHOWER submitted by Kio Kreations!  WOW, Now this is FUN. A bunch of talented vendors came together this past June to create this lovely shoot. Everything is just perfect! You must check out the DIY mini soap bottle aprons {tutorial, etc below}!
Kristen of Kio Kreations said…”Inspired by 1950s housewife meets Katy Perry and Dita Von Teese, we came up with a bright, cheeky bridal shower theme that every Peggy Sue would love to be a part of! And what’s more fun than getting dolled up like a happy 1950s housewife? Making all of your girlfriends join you in the fun!
Of course, no 1950s wife-to-be would be complete without a scarlet lip! To modernize the look, a cherry red lipstick with a little bit of clear lipgloss was applied to all the guests at this shower. Some flirty faux lashes and winged eyeliner completed their retro look. Soft waves, short rolled bangs and feminine curls that bounce inspired the hairstyles. All of the ladies also dressed in 50s styled dresses and wore adorable vintage floral aprons.
We put out the perfect spread of vintage cake stands, cupcake trays, and Coke bottles and made faux sundaes with the “IT” flower of the 50’s—carnations! We also included cheerful gerbera daisies in the mix. All of our “desserts” were topped with polka-dot button flowers, which also adorned some of the yummy vanilla and chocolate cupcakes. A few of the cupcakes were additionally decorated with felt polka dot cupcake toppers.
Button bobby pins with 3-D flowers, rhinestones, and fun stacked buttons served as the favors for the bridesmaids! They also had a blast making little mini aprons for their dish soap bottles to wear.
With all of this cheeky fun, this is one shower they’ll be talking about for decades to come!” Thanks for your submission, Kristen! Such a wonderful shoot! Congratulations on being today’s winning party feature!

Totally Awesome 80′s Party

my husband was born in 1980 so for the past few months i’ve been planning a “totally awesome” 80′s birthday party to honor the year of his birth & years of his childhood. the party was a hit. thinking back to the 80′s was hilarious! so here’s his ‘radical’ night…
shown in the above pic: mr. t, mr. t, mr. t…i found a huge life size stand up of mr. t online. we used him as a photo op and backdrop. for drinks i had capri sun’s (capri sun’s were the bomb in the 80′s…remember?) and water in plastic spiderman cups..oh, and you can’t forget the neon straws :). scooby doo adorned my food table (we had pizza by the way), along with neon plates/napkins and old school comic books.here’s the invitations that i sent out. i found these neon wallets on ot and just had to get them! i put the invite inside (also neon) along with an uno card (great 80′s game). the invite read, “uno you wanna’ be cool, right? so totally come to celebrate the year of ben’s birth! it’s a radical 80′s birthday party! come ready to have a tubular time! don’t give any bogus excuse! dress in your 80′s getup and be the bombdigity!” i attached the recipients names to the wallets with an 80′s friendship bracelet. they turned out awesome :). and this was the bithday cake…i brought back the rubik’s cube baby! the cake took forever but was well worth it :). i even made the middle layer a neon swirl :).
ah, the days of cassette tapes!! i wanted to incorporate cassette tapes (as well as vhs tapes..which are shown below) since that’s what was hip during the 80′s. i painted them (neon colors of course) and hung them from the ceiling fan. it was a really fun decoration, i was actually pretty pround of myself :).
i purchased a bunch of candy that screamed ’80′s’…poprocks, bazooka gum with comic strips in each wrapper, flinstone candy sticks, tom & jerry candy, and scooby doo candy packs. all of it was in a spiderman bowl (spiderman was one of my husbands favorite shows when he was young by the way). you can also see slinky’s in the background. i hung a bunch of them from the ceiling behind the cake table & above the bar. and there’s one of the vhs tapes i was talking about..i painted them in neon colors as well :). oh, and you can also see the neon table cloths that i had all over..i used some as back drops and some as actual table cloths.
do you remember these glasses?! they were the COOLEST in the 80′s! i was so happy when i found them online! i set them out for the guests to wear :).
i also set out neon glow bracelets (above in the spiderman cups)…
and here’s a close up of the SLAP BRACELETS and 80′s character pins!!! the neon slap bracelets were the best…and the pins were rainbow brite, my little pony, alf, karate kid, and she-ra/he-man! here’s some of the party goers in their ‘getup’…EVERYONE looked great!!! you can also see the authentic old school xmen poster i found online..and of course, our photo op, mr t :). i had our polaroid camera out for anyone who wanted a polaroid pic…we took a bunch of ‘em with mr t and all the other 80′s decor.
more of our ‘totally awesome’ guests :).
this is an inflatable boom box that i found on ebay…it has an ipod dock so it actually plays music (i had 80′s music that i purchased on itunes playing on and off throughout the night). it was awesome!
i bought a used old school nintendo machine! does this say 80′s or what?! we played pac-man and mario bros throughout the night. it brought back so many memories!
here’s my make shift stage. one of the best parts of the night took place here..and it may not be what you think. poetry readings faded out in the 80′s…but i decided to bring one back! i asked each guest to write a poem to ben/about ben to present to him at the party (this part was a surprise). IT WAS GREAT! everyone was SO creative!! some poems were hilarious and others very touching…all of them were SO clever. i got video of everyone reading the poems (no pics) so i need to upload one of the videos to post.
here’s some more of the 80′s decor. i decorated my whole upper bar with 80′s memorabiliaspiderman books, connect four games, scooby doo snacks, whistles, gelly bracelets, glitter bracelets, friendship bracelets, koosh balls, uno cards, garbage pail kid cards, aqua net hairspray, slinky’s, rainbow brite, transformers, and more…
i also had trivial pursuit totally 80′s out on our coffee table for guests to play. some of the questions were a riot…
i found some old school looking t shirts at target for my boys to wear. they had 80′s cartoon characters on them. they worked perfectly! here they are eating their pizza on the kitchen floor.
here’s a closer look at some of the 80′s stuff….gotta’ love it!does anyone remember trapper keepers?! i found most of these things on ebay. i had a trapper keeper exactly like this one! and the alf luchbox and thermos…wowsers…now that was cool!
Here’s the birthday guy and our two little guys as we were singing happy birthday.
rock on! here’s one more polaroid for you all :). i bought inflatable rocker guitars that fit the theme.
i also played a tv trivia game..i downloaded a bunch of 80′s tv theme songs (again, on itunes) like mash, muppets, carebears, hawaii 5 0, doogie howser, alf, stairway to heaven, love boat, and a lot more, and played them for guests..first one to guess the tv show got an 80′s whistle keychain or a hulk paddle ball. it was a really fun game!
all in all it was a great party. my husband loved it. happy birthday babe!!!!
